I created the series El Desierto Pintado (The Painted Desert), as a symbol that is a reflection of how humanity interprets and celebrates the land. The name originated after the captain Francisco Vazquez de Coronado first saw the geological phenomena, while on a quest to find the mythical Cíbola—Seven Cities of Gold. This series is part of the Vistas suite, which is an overarching collection of series that enables me to visually describe my encompassing experiences within landscapes. The idea is that one peers outward towards vertical and horizontal planes. Each series is an avenue for me to explore gestures, continual contour lines of forms, and to capture changing structures from different viewpoints. Aptly named, El Desierto Pintado, the juxtaposition of light with geological forms creates both vivid and washed-out colors. In this series, I synthesize the visual and geological experiences by abstracting the forms, creating irregular triangular shapes that create patterns and rhythms that transfix the eyes—leading to some comprehension on how indigenous beings created visual motifs through meaning and celebration of their culture and way of life. Through the process of creating these works, I discovered techniques that helped inform each proceeding artwork within the series.
